I had the refuge to myself at the early hour, and as I turned a quiet corner on the path, there was the Northern Harrier, sitting in the morning stillness on a tree stump.

Another visit, Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge near Arcata - full of spring wildflowers4/24/2015 Rare sighting on the property of these largest of the woodpeckers in this area! Tree swallow nesting still active in Tolay Lake Regional Park, part of which involves defending the nest Seeing a red-shouldered hawk speeding away, pursued by a small bird, I could only tell when I got the photo enlarged on the computer, the small bird chasing the hawk was the little Tree Swallow!!! ![]() There were some Long billed curlews in the fields, eating what, I don't know! Barn swallows were active at the front of the park, where there are buildings - also involved in nesting! ![]() Lots of wildflowers still in the park, thanks to some rare recent rain. ![]() Hummers zoom through the back and side yard, competing for access to feeders and flowering plants. ![]() Not sure if any bluebirds or swallows are actually nesting or not, but when the swallows start showing interest in the nest boxes, then suddenly a pair of Western Bluebirds materialize and start showing interest as well.... Meanwhile, the Oak Titmouse birds are definitely nesting, this adult bird bringing bugs to a nest in the back orchard.
Small groups of Violet-green swallows and tree swallows check out the nest boxes, which in turn seems to spur the nesting interest of the Western Bluebirds |
