The rare sighting of a couple of mountain bluebirds at Point Reyes prompted a trip to the coast, where they were easily seen hunting for insects at the top of the road to Drake's Beach.
Since my great friend Andrea sent me the book "H is for Hawk," there seems to be more hawks in my life! Co-incidence? Synchronicity? Actually the winter months are the best time for hawk viewing in Sonoma County.
I thought this was a kestrel at the time, since there are a lot of kestrels in this park. Realized later it was a merlin.
They are close in size to kestrels, but the prairie falcon is a noticeably larger bird.
