Grasshopper sparrows close up, Tolay Lake Regional Park

Usually seen from afar, a small flock of grasshopper sparrows suddenly jumped up onto the dry thistles almost right in from me, August walk through Tolay Lake Regional Park

Feeding on the dry grass seeds along with the grasshopper sparrows were the more common Savannah sparrows.

The kestrel is chased back over me by some crows who think it is carrying something to eat.

Then it is chased by another male kestrel, probably for the same reason, Tolay Lake Regional Park.

In late August the Say's Phoebe arrives in the park, and is a common sight along the fence posts, and for me a sign of the season's turning to fall and winter.
